Guide to Mistral AI: How to Use Mistral AI to Improve Performance

Artificial Intelligence is one of those tech marvels that has totally transformed our daily lives. A good example is Mistral AI.

Many people struggle to use it, but there is no need to panic.

This article will teach you how to use Mistral AI and integrate it with your projects. You will become a master in just a few minutes.

Without further ado, let’s dive in!

What is Mistral AI?

Mistral AI sets standard for what a company founded in 2023 should be. They way this platform was developed goes with many trends that are currently very popular.

In fact, Mistral AI was founded in 2023, but that’s not why it follows trends. What really makes them special is that their large language model is open source and released under the Apache 2.0 license.

With it being open source, its code and training can be accessed and improved by anyone with a Thinkpad laptop and coding knowledge.

Furthermore, this means it’s chatbot is completely free to use by anyone with a Mistral AI account.

How to Use Mistral AI

1. Setup

To start using Mistral AI, you’ll need to open your preferred browser and go to the Mistral AI website.

When you reach their website, you’ll need an account. Mistral AI doesn’t allow users to use Mistral models without one.

When you click the ‘Log in’ button on the homepage, you’ll be redirected to a sign-in form, where you’ll have to log in if you have an account or create a new one if you’re a new user.

2.  Setting up a Workspace

After successfully creating an account, you’ll have to make a workspace to manage your projects.

You’ll have to enter a private name for your workspace and choose a workspace team:

  1. Solo Creator: If you’re a solo creator, freelancer, or just looking to mess around with their models.
  2. Part of a Company: Choose this option if you’re part of a larger team or a group project or want to include others in a workspace.

I’ll be choosing the ‘solo creator’ option, but don’t worry, whatever you choose, you can always add or remove specific workspaces depending on your projects.

3. Dashboard

Their dashboard, or 'La Plateforme' as they call it, is filled with information and links that may confuse most users, but don’t worry, it’s simpler than it looks.

4. Le Chat

This is their straightforward method of using Mistral AI models, as it’s very accessible and has a friendly user interface.

le chat

With just two clicks, you can access their AI chatbot called ‘Le Chat.’ Click the link on the navbar, and you’ll be redirected to it.

le chat

Your initial chat should look something like this. Yes, it may look bland and empty, but there’s more than meets the eye.

Start by entering a prompt. It can do almost anything, from writing short stories to answering complex questions, but it excels in code generation.

You can even choose a different model based on the prompt you entered.

Here’s an example of me using the ‘Codestral’ model to create a Javascript program to reverse a string. Not only did it generate the code, but it thoroughly explained every step of what it did.

Just like other popular AI tools, it has a chat history to store chat you might want to revisit.

Congratulations. If you’ve made it this far, you now know the basics of using Mistral AI chat.

But this is just one of the many use cases it offers, so be sure to stick around and check out its full potential.

5. Project Integration

If you’re a software developer or have experience in coding and have a side project that you want to spice up, you can use the Mistral API.

An Application Programming Interface is a dedicated software or program with a distinct function that can be implemented in projects using API keys.

Mistral AI API has eight large language models, three of which are open-source and four of which are for commercial use.

To generate API keys, you’ll need to enter billing information to subscribe to one of their plans. They even offer a 2-week free trial for new members to test out Mistral AI models.

API subscription

After clicking the ‘Subscribe’ button, you’ll need to enter some personal and billing information and choose a plan that best suits your needs.

These are all the models you can choose from and their price per million tokens, so there won’t be monthly payments. You only pay for what you use.

Finally, after subscribing to one of these plans, you can generate and implement a Mistral API key to your project.

6. Codestral

This is their newest feature, and it’s aimed at developers. It aims to help them with coding, debugging, and overall improving their programming experience.

You’ll need to request this feature as it’s still in early access.

To do this, click the ‘Request Codestral Access’ button, which redirects you to a different page.

Please note that to use this feature, you’ll need to enter a valid phone number so that they can send you a verification code to your phone.

After the verification, you’ll be able to generate an API key and implement it in any text editor or IDE you wish.

Tips and Tricks

As you saw, Mistral AI isn’t that confusing, and you can use it for pretty much anything with the right prompts.

That being said, here are some tips to better your experience on the platform:

Research and Experiment

Having basic knowledge of Mistral AI models can make your experience a lot simpler and less time-consuming.

Knowing what model to use for certain prompts will change the chatbot's answer.

The best way to learn this is to play around with its features and experiment with all of the available models.

Community Support

There are giant communities dedicated to answering questions and helping people with problems related to AI.

The answers to all of your questions can be found online.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Many people have had or are having those exact questions, and engaging with a community can make anyone feel at home.

This guide aims to help people learn the basics of large language models, as having that upper hand can lead to excellent results.

Artificial intelligence is a real game-changer both now and it will continue evolving in the future.

At this pace, we can’t really predict how far it will go, we can only wonder what the future will look like.

That’s where Mistral AI shows up and gives a glimpse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mistral AI models and ChatGPT are two completely different large language models.

When compared, most of the Mistral AI models are better than GPT-3.5, but GPT-4 and their latest GPT-4o perform far better than any other large language model.

With this in mind, Mistral AI API keys are generally cheaper than ChatGPs and is a more popular option for startups.

While Mistral AI's chatbot is free and customizable, its API keys are tied to subscriptions and premium plans.

Don’t worry, as their plans are pretty affordable. You don’t pay a monthly fee. You’re charged when a million tokens are used.

Mistral AI is a very successful company, as it was founded in 2023 and became successful reasonably quickly.

As of now, the company is worth around $6 billion.

Their AI models excel in different things, making them good in almost anything.

For example, their latest model, ‘Codestral,’ is trained to help programmers with code generation and debugging. Two other models, ‘Mistral 7b’ and ‘Mistral large,’ are general-purpose AI models.

There are many use cases, and Mistral AI doesn’t intend to stop anytime soon.
