Guide to Novel AI: How to Use Novel AI and Improve Your Writing

Writing can be an easy skill to pick up but challenging to master. 

However, with the introduction of artificial intelligence in the 21st century has bridged the gap between beginner and experienced writers, making it easier than ever to succeed.

Novel AI is a great example of an LLM that has been trained to assist writers and authors in creating compelling stories.

What is Novel AI?

Novel AI is a fairly new startup founded just three years ago.

With several years of experience, it grew exponentially and reached its current status. 

It started as a simple text generation chatbot, but as it evolved, it gained more features and customization options to enhance user experience.

That’s not all it can do, as recent updates upgraded it with an image generator and several other AI modules.

Novel AI has proved to be one of the best in the field. Its creative writing skills and advanced settings place it among OpenAI’s and Google’s AI models.

How to Use Novel AI?

1. Getting Started

To get started, all you need to do is go to the Novel AI website and click the ‘Start Writing for Free’ button. It can’t get simpler than this.



You’ll be redirected to the ‘Stories’ tab, where you can freely write prompts and experiment with the model.

2. Choosing a Tutorial (Optional)

Once you’ve been redirected, your page should look something like this.



You have a couple of options to choose from. If you’re a new user, I highly recommend the ‘Storyteller’ tutorial, as it can help any beginner with prompt guidance.

Their ‘Text Adventure’ option is still being worked on, and if you want to learn things on your own, you can skip the steps altogether.



After starting the tutorial, follow all the steps to get a firm understanding of how Novel AI works.

If you get stuck on a specific step, feel free to search for the answer, or if you’re feeling confident, you can skip the tutorial from any of the steps.

3. Creating an Account (Optional)

The best of Novel AI is that it doesn’t require an account to use its AI tool.

Whether you completed or skipped the tutorial, you’ll be redirected to the dashboard, which I’ll cover later.



A prompt will appear at the top of the screen stating that you aren’t using an account. To create one or log in with an existing account, click the ‘Sign Up’ button or the link at the top.



Start by entering an email and a password. There’s also the optional field ‘Gift Key,’ which users who received a premium plan key can enter.

After signing up, you’ll receive a confirmation link that you’ll need to click to register your account as verified.

4. Text Generation

Once you’ve logged in, you can start writing your first story. 



You can start by clicking on the ‘New Story’ button. 



As you can see, the started project is already created in the ‘History’ section on the left.

Novel AI lets you choose one of two modes to write in: Storyteller and Text Adventure, but if you can’t choose or want to test some things out, you can select one from hundreds of user-created stories.

Storyteller

In Storyteller mode, you have the whole textbox to enter your prompt.



A prompt can be anything, from a single sentence to an introduction to a book. Novel AI can write almost anything.

Experiment with it and try out some of its features to see if this mode suits you.

Here’s an example of me using it to add sentences to the start of a story.



Text Adventure

The Text Adventure module is a whole different writing method. Here, you enter your prompt at the button and instruct the AI model what to do.



This option is more customizable than the other, as you have complete control over what it should write.

Below is a simple example of what the text generation looks like. 

The initial yellow text indicates what the premise should be, and the blue text is the text prompt that you’ll enter in the bar at the bottom.



5. Image Generation

If you don’t want to write or want to test out other models, you can use the NovelAI image generator.

It's a simple tool ranked as one of the best AI image generators.

Note this feature is not free to use, as you’ll need NovelAI’s currency, called ‘Anlas,’ to generate an image.

To access that feature, click the ‘Generate Images’ button on the dashboard.



The tool is quite simple to use. The side menu is very user-friendly and has customization options that can change the quality and content of your image.



If you’re subscribed to one of the premium plans or have some Anlas leftover, play around with this tool to get the hang of it.

6. Text to Speech

Text-to-speech is the last AI tool in their ensemble, and it’s quite remarkable what it can do.



First, you’ll need to create an AI voice to use TTS. Click the ‘Text-to-Speech’ button to open the settings window.



This is how your setup should look. All of these settings can be altered, so go on and create an AI voice that you’ll like.

When you’re done and enter the text you want to be spoken, press the save icon just right of the story voice menu, and it’ll download an MP3 file with the voice.

Useful Tips

As you can see, Novel AI’s tools are fairly easy to use, but you can always change some settings to get the best results.

Be Thorough

All of their features work better when you are being as descriptive as possible.

Artificial intelligence can extend and alter your story but won’t carry your vision of it. Its customizable editor makes it easier to enter prompts as long as you want them to be.

Moreover, the image generation mode can also give better results if you expand your prompt.

Don’t be Afraid to Experiment

You’ll never get the most out of your AI chatbots if you don’t experiment with them.

Novel AI tools are no exception. You shouldn’t feel bad if your story isn’t looking like you’ve imagined it to be.

Make use of the sidebar and the advanced settings bar on the right of the text editor.

As mentioned, when you first create an account, you’ll be placed on a free trial, which is extremely limited.
