In Brief

Bumble introduces 'Deception Detector', an AI tool to identify and block spam, scams, and fake profiles on the platform.

The tool was successful in automatically blocking 95% of spam or scam accounts during testing, reducing user reports of such accounts by 45% within two months.

Bumble's research indicates that fake profiles and scam risks are major concerns among users, especially women, who report anxiety over the authenticity of online matches.

Bumble CEO Lidiane Jones emphasizes the company's commitment to genuine connections and trust in the AI era, particularly for women making the first move on the app.

The launch aligns with FTC reports of significant losses due to romance scams, highlighting the necessity of such AI tools in dating apps and on social media platforms.

Bumble has rolled out a new feature aimed at stopping fake profiles and scammers before they interact with users. This feature, named Deception Detector, automatically stops most unwanted accounts.

During trials, this tool was effective in stopping nearly all the unwanted accounts it detected. It also led to fewer user complaints about these issues. The Deception Detector works with the app's team to keep the platform safe.

This update is a response to concerns from Bumble's users, who worry about fake profiles and scams. Many women, in particular, have shared their worries about whether their matches are real.

Bumble's CEO, Lidiane Jones, has emphasized the company's focus on creating a trustworthy environment, especially for women who are taking the first step in making connections. "Bumble Inc. was founded with the aim to build equitable relationships and empower women to make the first move, and Deception Detector is our latest innovation as part of our ongoing commitment to our community to help ensure that connections made on our apps are genuine,” Jones said.

These concerns are backed by reports of costly romance scams affecting many people, often starting through direct messages on social media rather than dating apps.

In addition to security features, Bumble continues to enhance the app's functionality. For example, the app now offers suggestions to help users start conversations. This function is also available on Bumble For Friends, a platform for finding platonic connections.

Both the Deception Detector and a previous feature, Private Detector, which blurs inappropriate images, are available on Bumble's dating and friend-finding services.
