In Brief

Google's Gemini 1.5 Pro now on Vertex AI public preview.

Gemini offers context processing up to 1 million tokens.

Multimodal, supports text, images, videos, audio.

Early users leverage large context window for various tasks.

Google aims to optimize Gemini 1.5 Pro for better performance.

At this year’s Cloud Next conference in Las Vegas, Google revealed that its most sophisticated generative AI model, Gemini 1.5 Pro, is now available for public preview on Vertex AI, Google’s enterprise-targeted AI development platform.

The new member of Google’s Gemini lineup comprises one of the attention-grabbing capabilities that 1.5 Pro renders accurately – it can process between 128,000 and 1 million tokens of context, based on the configuration. The term token refers to smaller bits of raw data in the context window that are fed into the model, enabling it to grasp and generate text more meaningfully.

Indeed, one million tokens go beyond Anthropic’s Claude 3 and OpenAI’s prediction models up to GPT-4 Turbo max context with 25/2500 words and 50-word context, respectively.

In practical terms, understanding the context is essential to AI models. Shorter windows can randomly wander off-topic, and then generate appropriate conversational content, while longer windows can demonstrate richer and more nuanced descriptions and better payloads such as conversation and storytelling.

Gemini 1.5 Pro is not only for text; it identifies visualizations and videos and now audio streams, which embodies numerous practical applications such as code reviews, document understanding, and continuous conversations.

The possibilities offered by Gemini 1.5 Pro are multi-faceted as it has ushered in a new era in AI development. Besides the aforementioned examples, the mortgage originator United Wholesale Mortgage, the TV network TBS, and the code-writing platform Replit are among its early adopters.

Even though its processing could be further expedited, Google is likely to improve its capabilities, thus making this new tool a leap in AI-related solutions.
