Google introduces Code Assist, its fresh rival to GitHub’s Copilot

On Tuesday, at its Cloud Next convention, Google debuted Gemini Code Assist, a new enterprise-targeted AI code completion and assistance solution created to improve developer efficiency.

Code Assist was previously available under the now abandoned Duet AI moniker, representing a rebranding of the prior service and a major revision following a 2023 statement by Google that suggested it would shift over from its Codey model to Gemini. Presented at the Las Vegas conference with around 30,000 participants, Code Assist will be available as a plugin for popular editors such as VS Code and JetBrains.

Google Assist, Google Cloud’s new product, will directly compete with GitHub’s Copilot Enterprise with various enhancements that are unique to Google. Code Assist supports Gemini 1.5 Pro, which includes a million-token context window that makes code suggestions more accurate and allows for more significant code transformations.

Furthermore, Code Assist can be customized for one’s company’s internal code base, which improves the quality of code completions and generations. This product is still in the preview, but industry figures like Kai Du, Turing’s Director of Engineering, have already given it their approval.

Code Assist, however, stands out by allowing its knowledge to be applied either on-premises or on other platforms such as GitLab, GitHub, and Atlassian’s BitBucket. In addition to this, Google has collaborated with several developer-centric firms to improve Code Assist’s knowledge, with Stack Overflow being one of them.

As Google continues to work on developing other developer offerings, the impact of Code Assist will depend on how well it performs compared to other current offerings, such as GitHub’s Copilot. In addition to assisting developers, Google also announced CodeGemma and Gemini Cloud Assist on the same day as Code Assist.
