Pinecone’s vector database gets a new serverless architecture

Vector databases, once a niche product, are now gaining widespread attention for their ability to enhance large language models with context and long-term memory. Pinecone, founded by the team behind Amazon SageMaker, has emerged as a leader in this space, securing $138 million in funding since its inception in 2019. Today, Pinecone unveils Pinecone Serverless, a new and improved serverless architecture to power its service.

The revamped Pinecone Serverless architecture separates reads, writes, and storage, promising significant cost reductions for users, potentially up to 10x to 100x. With support for vector clustering atop blob storage, Pinecone Serverless can handle massive data sizes with lower latencies. Moreover, new indexing and retrieval algorithms enable fast vector search across blob storage, complemented by a multi-tenant compute layer.

Pinecone emphasizes the serverless nature of its platform, eliminating the need for developers to manage infrastructure. This allows for easier development and faster time-to-market for GenAI applications. Developers of all sizes can leverage Pinecone Serverless with their preferred large language models, facilitating the creation of reliable and impactful applications.

Pinecone Serverless offers seamless integrations with various AI and back-end services, including Anthropic, Anyscale, Cohere, Confluent, LangChain, Pulumi, and Vercel. Guillermo Rauch, CEO and founder of Vercel, highlights the importance of Pinecone for GenAI applications, announcing that all Vercel users can now integrate Pinecone Serverless into their applications effortlessly, with further enhancements on the horizon.
