In Brief

Singapore-based Brilliant Labs announces Frame, a pair of lightweight augmented reality (AR) glasses powered by a multimodal AI assistant named Noa, featuring capabilities like voice commands, visual processing, image generation, and translation.

Frame incorporates advanced AI models including Perplexity AI for conversational search, Stability AI's Stable Diffusion for text-to-image, OpenAI's GPT4 for text generation, and Whisper for speech recognition, aiming to provide a comprehensive augmented reality experience.

John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, known for Pokémon GO, has invested in Frame, though the exact investment amount remains undisclosed. Frame's development reflects a significant interest in AR technology from influential figures in the tech industry.

Frame is designed for daily wear, distinguishing itself from bulkier alternatives with its fashionable design and compatibility with prescription lenses, marketed as an homage to iconic figures like John Lennon and Steve Jobs. It is priced at $349 and available for preorder, with shipping starting in April.

Brilliant Labs, established in 2019, has raised a total of $6 million in funding, including a recent investment from John Hanke. Frame follows the company's first product, Monocle, and continues its commitment to open-source development, offering developers access to its codebase and hardware schematics.

This week, as the tech world is buzzing about Vision Pro, a new startup called Brilliant Labs from Singapore is making waves with its unique augmented reality (AR) glasses named Frame. These glasses are not only lightweight but are powered by an assistant named Noa, making them stand out from Apple's product.

John Hanke, the CEO behind the popular AR game Pokémon GO, has shown his support for Frame by investing in it, although the exact amount hasn't been shared.

Frame's assistant, Noa, can do a lot thanks to its built-in capabilities. It can understand voice commands, see and interpret images, create images, and even translate languages using a mix of advanced technologies. This means you could be shopping and simply ask Noa to compare prices for you right on the spot.

Aravind Srinivas, the mind behind one of the technologies used by Noa, said, “The future of human/AI interaction will come to life in innovative wearables and new devices, and I’m so excited to be bringing Perplexity’s real-time answer engine to Brilliant Labs’ Frame.”

However, there's a catch. For now, Frame needs to be connected to a smartphone to access all these cool features, but the team hopes to make it fully independent in the future.

Frame is the successor to Monocle, Brilliant Labs' first product, which was well-received for its affordability and ability to be programmed for different uses. Like Monocle, Frame will be open source, allowing developers to tinker with and improve it.

Designed to be an everyday accessory, Frame weighs just 39 grams and even offers prescription lenses. Its design pays tribute to iconic figures like John Lennon and Steve Jobs.

Starting today, you can pre-order Frame for $349, with deliveries set to begin in April. Since its start in 2019, Brilliant Labs has secured a total of $6 million in funding from various notable investors, including the recent contribution from John Hanke.
