In Brief

Google Maps introduces a new feature powered by generative AI to help users discover places.

The feature analyzes millions of locations and contributions from Local Guides to provide recommendations.

Users can make conversational queries, like searching for "places with a vintage vibe in SF," to get organized recommendations.

The AI can generate recommendations for niche or specific queries, enhancing the search experience.

Initially, the feature is rolling out in the U.S. to select Local Guides and will expand to other users later.

Google Maps is introducing a new feature today to help you find cool places using generative AI.

This feature uses large language models to analyze millions of locations and contributions from Local Guides.

For example, if you're looking for vintage shops in San Francisco, you can type "places with a vintage vibe in SF" and get recommendations organized by categories.

The AI aims to make the search experience more conversational. If you ask about lunch after searching for vintage shops, it will find restaurants with a similar vibe.

The feature can generate recommendations for even the most niche or specific queries.

Initially, the feature is rolling out in the U.S. to select Local Guides and will be available to other users soon.

Google sees this as just the beginning of enhancing Maps with generative AI to help users discover new places.
