Overview

Search Labs by Google is an innovative initiative designed to introduce new capabilities and experiments for Google Search in a preview format before they become publicly available. Announced at the Google I/O conference on May 10, 2023, it marks a significant step in Google's continuous efforts to evolve its search technology. The main aim of Google Search Labs is to provide users with a glimpse into potential future functionalities of Google's search engine.

One of the key experiments within Google Search Labs is the Search Generative Experience (SGE). SGE is a form of generative artificial intelligence (AI) interface for Google Search. It utilizes Google's Pathways Language Model, a large language model, to respond to queries, offer recommendations, and provide a conversational interface option for search queries. This new feature enables users to quickly grasp the essence of a topic, find fresh ideas, and facilitate follow-up questions in a more conversational and natural manner.

Apart from SGE, Google Search Labs includes other experiments like Code Tips and Add to Sheets. Code Tips is aimed at providing answers to programming code-related queries, supporting a variety of programming languages and developer tools. Add to Sheets, on the other hand, allows users to directly insert Google search results into a Google Sheets spreadsheet, facilitating easier sharing and tracking of search information.

The platform is currently in its early stages and available in a limited capacity, primarily in the United States. Users interested in participating in these experiments can sign up, but initially, they are placed on a waitlist. The user feedback from these experiments is crucial in shaping the future direction of Google Search, as it helps the company assess what works and what requires improvement.

Overall, Google Search Labs represents a significant step in Google's broader efforts to integrate to its services and products, enhancing user experience and paving the way for future technological advancements in search and information retrieval.

Use cases

Search Labs by Google, specifically through its Search Generative Experience (SGE), offers a range of practical applications for users. These use cases primarily revolve around the innovative integration of generative to Google Search, enhancing the overall search experience and efficiency. Here are some key applications:

  1. AI-Powered Overviews: SGE allows users to quickly grasp the main points of a topic, providing concise summaries along with factors to consider and further exploration pointers. This feature is particularly useful for getting up to speed on new or complex topics.

  2. Follow-up Questions: The tool enables users to ask follow-up questions in a conversational manner, diving deeper into specific aspects of a topic. This aspect of SGE makes it easier to explore a subject in depth without needing to perform multiple separate searches.

  3. Exploring and Taking Next Steps: SGE facilitates easy exploration and decision-making by offering high-quality search results and diverse perspectives, which Google is known for. This feature can be especially helpful when looking for a range of products or when needing quick pointers for specific questions or unique situations.

  4. Code Tips: This experiment is designed to assist users with programming code-related queries. It supports various programming languages and offers insights on popular developer tools, making it a valuable resource for developers and programmers.

  5. Add to Sheets: An innovative feature where users can directly insert a Google search result into a Google Sheets spreadsheet. This experiment aims to provide a new way of organizing and sharing search information, especially useful for research and data compilation tasks.

  6. Experimentation and Feedback: Search Labs serves as a platform for experimenting with new ideas and obtaining preproduction-grade capabilities. Users can participate in these experiments and provide feedback, influencing the development and improvement of these capabilities.

  7. Awareness of Future Google Directions: By engaging with Search Labs, users and organizations can gain early insight into potential future developments in Google's search technology, which can be valuable for strategic planning.

These applications indicate Google's commitment to enhancing user experience through advanced tegration, offering more intuitive, efficient, and versatile search capabilities.

FAQ

If you're on the waitlist for an experiment and it becomes available, we'll send you an email notification if you've opted to receive updates via email. When you gain access to an experiment, you can turn it on or off whenever you like. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to provide feedback. If you change your mind after joining the waitlist, you can leave it.

The waiting time can vary depending on the experiment and its availability.

We are actively expanding Search Labs beyond the United States, but we cannot provide exact dates for availability in specific countries at this time.

You may be asked to review and accept specific terms of service for each experiment when applicable. Additionally, the following terms also apply: - Google Privacy Policy - Terms of Service - Generative AI Additional Terms of Service

Before making generative AI tools available for Google Workspace for Education accounts, particularly for users under 18, we want to ensure: - School administrators have transparency and control over student access to generative AI. - School staff and faculty are well-informed about generative AI tools, enabling them to align with school policies and test these tools in their school environment. We are working closely with the education community to find new ways to provide useful tools and functionalities to educators and students.

For SGE, not all search queries will generate AI-powered overviews in your search results. If your query doesn't match, you won't see SGE content.

You can check the end date of an experiment on its card on the Search Labs page. Please note that these dates may change over time.

Pricing & discounts

Google Search Labs, including its Search Generative Experience (SGE), does not appear to have specific subscription plans or pricing associated with its usage. The platform, primarily designed for experimenting with new search features and tegrations, seems to be accessible without any direct cost to the user. The access to Search Labs and its features like SGE, Code Tips, and Add to Sheets is currently provided on an experimental basis, mainly for feedback and testing purposes.

Additionally, for Google One subscribers, there's a mention of "priority access" to Search Labs experiments. Google One offers different subscription plans, such as the Basic plan with 100 GB storage for $1.99/month, the Standard plan with 200 GB storage for $2.99/month, and Premium plans with storage options ranging from 2 TB to 30 TB. The Premium plans also include additional benefits like 10% back in the Google Store and extra Google Workspace features. However, it's important to note that being a Google One Premium subscriber does not guarantee immediate access to Search Labs but rather prioritizes these users as more spots become available.

The information suggests that while Google One subscriptions offer various storage and service benefits, the direct relationship between these subscriptions and the features available in Search Labs may primarily be about access priority rather than distinct feature sets or functionalities tied to different pricing tiers. This approach aligns with Google's ongoing efforts to refine and enhance its search capabilities through user feedback and experimentation.

For the latest and most accurate information regarding Google Search Labs, including any potential updates on subscription plans or pricing, it would be best to refer directly to Google's official announcements or their website.
