Getty Images launches a new GenAI service for iStock customers

Getty Images introduced a new service at CES 2024 called Generative AI by iStock, utilizing AI models trained on iStock's vast stock photography and video collections to produce new licensable images and artwork.

Generative AI by iStock aims to ensure that generated content avoids copyrighted elements like known products, people, or places. It offers modification and generation of images in 75 languages, with the option to integrate it into existing apps and plug-ins via an API.

The service is priced at $15 for every 100 generated images. Grant Farhall, iStock's chief product officer, emphasized the goal of providing customers with a simple and affordable AI option for their creative process while safeguarding against potential copyright issues.

This launch comes amid debates over copyright implications of AI-generated content. GenAI models, drawing from extensive datasets, may inadvertently replicate copyrighted material, raising concerns among creators and industry experts.

Getty Images' Generative AI by iStock offers $10,000 in legal coverage for any licensed visual generated by customers, addressing potential copyright disputes. This move aligns with similar efforts from other companies, reflecting ongoing efforts to navigate copyright challenges in the AI landscape.
