In Brief

Anamorph, a new film and technology company, officially launched, aiming to revolutionize the cinematic experience through proprietary generative technology.

The company debuted its technology at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival with the documentary "Eno," focused on musician Brian Eno, showcasing a platform that creates billions of potential sequences for a unique viewing experience.

Anamorph prioritizes live events and theatrical releases due to existing streaming platforms lacking the infrastructure for its dynamic generative video files.

Gary Hustwit, co-founder, emphasizes the challenge of integrating the technology into current streaming networks but envisions developing in-house capabilities for major streamers in the future.

Anamorph explores collaborations beyond films, considering projects such as art displays, blockbusters, and advertising ventures, with a focus on fostering partnerships and consultations with filmmakers and content creators.

Anamorph, a fresh entrant in the film and technology landscape, has marked its official launch, bringing forth its ambitious mission to transform the cinematic experience with proprietary generative technology. The brainchild of filmmaker Gary Hustwit and digital artist Brendan Dawes, Anamorph made its debut at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival by introducing the documentary "Eno," centered around the iconic musician Brian Eno. This pioneering generative platform, showcased through "Eno," leverages 500 hours of meticulously curated content to create billions of potential sequences, delivering a distinctive viewing encounter with every presentation and challenging traditional linear storytelling norms.

Having dedicated five years to the development of this groundbreaking technology, Anamorph is committed to prioritizing live events and theatrical releases. The technology was first showcased at the Venice Biennale in October 2023, where Anamorph demonstrated its capability to create a 168-hour-long original film using generative methods in real-time. Despite this revolutionary approach, the company currently faces a challenge – existing streaming platforms lack the infrastructure to support Anamorph's dynamic generative video files for a diverse audience.

Something that the theater industry badly needs right now is a reason to get people to come in, and if there is a uniqueness about the live cinema experience, that’s one way that can be achieved

Gary Hustwit

Gary Hustwit emphasizes that the current streaming networks aren't equipped for dynamically generating unique video files and streaming them to a vast audience, thereby hindering the widespread adoption of Anamorph's technology. However, the company envisions developing these capabilities internally and making them accessible to major streaming services in the future.

While Anamorph's primary focus currently lies in live events, theatrical releases, and cinematic experiences, the company is exploring broader horizons. It is considering collaborations on various projects, including art displays, blockbuster films, and advertising ventures. Advertising agencies have already expressed interest, with one proposing the creation of 10,000 versions of a one-minute commercial.\

It does require a little bit more active participation of the viewer to notice the differences if they rewatch it again, and get excited about discovering what wasn’t there

Gary Hustwit

Addressing potential concerns about the format's applicability to TV series with episodic structures, Gary Hustwit notes that the nature of Anamorph's generative system requires a more active participation from viewers to notice differences upon rewatching. Despite this, the company sees this as an exciting and novel experience, offering something unique in the cinematic realm.

As Anamorph officially launches, it invites consultations with filmmakers, content creators, studios, and streaming companies. Instead of making its tools publicly accessible, the company aims to collaborate on projects, considering source material and overarching storytelling goals. Anamorph is currently in discussions with multiple companies, and the cost of each project will vary depending on its scale and complexity. Ultimately, Anamorph's main goal is to disseminate the concept of this new cinema paradigm and forge partnerships with innovative collaborators to further explore its possibilities.

We could make a Marvel movie that changes every time it plays — which would be amazing — and the costs of that would be more than a small video art project. But we’re interested in collaborating on projects in both those ranges. Our main goal is to get the idea out about this new kind of cinema and hook up with great collaborators to help explore this idea
