Microsoft design exec turns to AI to illustrate son’s book about coping with anxiety
Microsoft's design chief Jon Friedman teamed up with his son Judah to create a children's book titled "Max & The Purple Anxiety Monster." Friedman, who is experienced in AI technology, used DALL-E to illustrate the book's watercolor-style images.
The story, inspired by Judah's feelings during a family move, follows Max coping with anxiety as represented by the Purple Anxiety Monster. The book highlights themes of friendship and acceptance, providing a relatable narrative for children dealing with similar emotions.
As a designer who’s helping design and guide Copilot there’s a lot of really exciting stuff that will come where we’ll be able to handle overarching things in the memory of a conversation and then fine tune things. I think over time, you’ll see the tools get way better at this.
While the AI artwork was instrumental, Friedman also used ChatGPT to refine the story's structure and pacing. The collaborative effort between technology and human input resulted in a meaningful and well-crafted book.
The book's success led to its publication by Clyde Hill Publishing, with availability on major bookselling platforms and local libraries. Friedman's use of AI tools demonstrates their potential in aiding creative endeavors, especially in collaboration with human creativity and storytelling.
The book is as much my dad’s as it is mine. We did a lot of work on it together.
